The key problem I've found in medical marketing is that the industry, as a whole, is years behind other industries. So, when I was hiring people to help my practice, I found that the medical digital marketing companies weren't as strong as digital marketers in other industries. Likewise, I found that the marketers in other industries had no idea how to work with doctors and medical practices.

This is why I kept running into problems after working with seven different agencies.

To win visibility in competitive markets, you need strong marketing. But, in healthcare you also have to be careful how you market yourself. You can't use the same tactics as Chipotle or Nike. Your marketing needs to be patient-education focused and never reek of a profit motive.

Thus, medical marketing requires a specific approach to get results while always observing the fact that a doctor's relationship with their patient is sacred. Your marketing cannot ever compromise the trust your patients have in you.

The next part of the problem is finding people who work like you do. Marketing companies have a completely different culture from the medical industry, and I kept butting heads with agencies who didn't appreciate my needs.

When I was running a medical practice, I constantly felt frustrated about how difficult it was to find good help. It wasn't that I hadn’t hired talented marketers, rather that I couldn’t find people who cared about my practice the way I did. Or, worse yet, they didn't know how to help because they didn't really understand the medical industry.

Regardless of how much money we spent, the results were pretty much the same.
